About Fire Safety Engineering

Fire safety engineering takes a holistic look at how fires start, how they grow and how people react to them. It can also examine and recommends materials and designs that slow the spread of fire and protect people, critical assets and property.

SGW knows that not all buildings fit into certain types that conform to standard building safety planning and calculations.

Fire engineering is the process of taking the prescriptive standards that comes from ‘Approved Document B’ that are inflexible particularly if your built environment professional has an especially innovative or unique design and allows you to take another approach.

Fire engineering is still focused around safety but takes into account additional additions in a more holistic approach to the assessment and implementation of any fire safety systems.

Using fire safety engineering, SGW can demonstrate that prescriptive standards don’t apply or that they can be circumnavigated because further safeguards have been put in place that allows for styles and sections of a building that is not normally permitted to be acceptable and safe.

One common area, in conjunction with computational fluid dynamics that can make a difference to things like the recommended size of escape doors and an increase in travel distances to exits, is the way the building or part of the building can handle smoke.

Using SGW’s fire safety engineers we can demonstrate the way and time smoke would affect a building and the people in it and what different factors such as smoke extraction can have to allow for designs that would otherwise not be permissible.

Core Fire Engineering Services Available;

  1. Peer review fire strategies as part of the tender process and outline opportunities to add value and increase the competitiveness of your tender.
  2. Rationalize passive fire protection on site, providing solutions that are practical and workable.
  3. Develop construction phase fire strategies to ensure the safety of the workforce and the surrounding buildings.
  4. Assess products (such as doors) and construction to determine likely levels of fire resistance performance.
